Members of the Student Club “Jashn” highlighted the spirit and energy of incredible India by celebrating the festivals of Diwali (festival of lights) and Dussehra (victory of good over evil) on October 15, 2019. The venue was decorated with the theme of an Indian wedding with the use of rich festive colors of red, orange, yellow and golden.
Sheryl Nazareth, President of the Jashn Club, began the ceremony with an introduction to the Indian culture and gave a brief history of the significance of the two festivals. The Jashn club aims to educate people about the mosaic of multicultural experiences of India with its rich heritage, myriad attractions, and festivals. To experience the sumptuous Indian cuisine, students and staff enjoyed a variety of sweet and savory dishes.
A Dandiya Dance workshop (a traditional dance form in Western India where people dance using wooden sticks) was conducted by Nirathi Rao from Rhythmaya Dance Academy. Sangita Sharma had a hand henna booth and donated the proceeds of the henna painting to the charitable organization, Humanity for Our Mothers and Children, which was established by her son. Special guests for the event were Kriti Raofrom from United Bank in Fairfax, Sangita Sharma from Radha Spa, Fairfax, and Sima Button from Sima Visions.
Overall, it was a fun-filled event and everyone enjoyed being a part of our mini India celebrations here at VIU.
