Growing up, St. Patrick’s Day was always something fun to do and celebrate. I never really knew why we celebrated it. I only knew that we would have fun on March 17th. The biggest thing that we did to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day was to ensure we wore green. No matter what you did, you had to wear green on that day. If you forgot to wear green, you were in danger of being pinched – even if you were not Irish! We also celebrated with a big parade, eating Irish food, and of course turning the Chicago River green. On St. Patrick’s Day, everyone is Irish!
What many people do not know is that St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland. He helped spread Christianity to the Irish people and March 17th happens to be the day of his death. But for us, the day is not a celebration of his death, but a celebration of the culture and traditions of the Irish people!
This year we hope that you can get a little taste of Ireland by catching a parade or tasting some Irish food. And, a little last-minute advice…remember to wear green!
