To kick off the spring 2019 semester, VIU held a Faculty Summit on Thursday, January 10th, 2019 which gathered over 50 VIU faculty and staff. VIU holds a faculty summit at the start of each semester with the aim to of providing an in-person opportunity for VIU faculty to gather for networking and professional development.
The VIU Spring 2019 Faculty Summit began with an orientation for new faculty to review available VIU services such as Registrars, Library Services, Career Services and Student Affairs. This was followed by an opportunity for faculty and staff to mingle and network over a buffet dinner.
Christy Koonts, VIU Vice President for Institutional Effectiveness, officially welcomed the faculty and introduce the new Summit format which included concurrent break out sessions. The in-service portion of the meeting included an American Disabilities Act (ADA) presentation led by Allison Forbes, Director of Student Affairs.
Following the general presentations, the faculty broke up into separate groups to attend concurrent session covering topics such as online education, student engagement, computer information systems, and U.S trade policy. VIU faculty led the sessions which was a welcomed opportunity for them to receive teaching feedback from their peers and share their knowledge and research.
VIU greatly values the diversity and broad experience of its faculty body and appreciates suggestions to continuously improve its faculty’s professional development opportunities and teaching experience. Feedback can be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org.
