Professor Hampton Dowling sponsored his students in MBA 628 and GOVT 617 for about four hours at Virginia’s Inland Port about 60 miles west of VIU in Front Royal, Virginia. The “Inland Port” doesn’t have any ships or piers, but is rather the intermodal transportation hub for rail and truck cargo going to and from all parts of the country connecting with the Port of Virginia in Norfolk, Virginia. The Inland Port takes some of the congestion away from the port in Norfolk, transfers cargo between rail cars and trucks, for further transfer. The class, Global Sourcing and Logistics, witnessed transshipment operations and was given a presentation by the port director. It was an opportunity to connect academic content to real-world operations managing exports, imports and other domestic commerce.
