VIU proudly hosted the Candidate’s Forum on Sunday, September 30th at our Fairfax, VA campus. The event was sponsored by the Multicultural Chambers Alliance comprised of the Asian-American Chamber of Commerce, the Northern Virginia Black Chamber of Commerce, and the Virginia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Attendees and members of the Press enjoyed a bi-partisan approach to hearing the platforms conveyed by the Virginia candidates running in the November 2018 election.
Ms. Kathryn Falk, VP Market Leader, Northern Virginia Operations, for Cox Communications was the emcee. Dr. Ron Kovach, VP for Academic Affairs gave a general welcome on behalf of VIU before turning the floor over to the Republican candidates. The Republicans in attendance included Mr. Corey Stewart, U.S. Senate Candidate; Congresswoman Barbara Comstock, VA-10th Congressional District Incumbent; Mr. Jeff Dove, VA-11th Congressional District Candidate; and Mr. Thomas Oh, VA-8th Congressional District Candidate. After a brief networking break, VIU President, Dr. Isa Sarac gave a brief address followed by the Democrats who presented their platforms. The Democratic candidates team included Senator Tim Kaine, Incumbent Candidate; Congressman Gerry Connolly, VA-11th Congressional District Incumbent; and State Senator Jennifer Wexton, VA-10th Congressional District Candidate. Unfortunately, Mr. Matt Waters, Libertarian U.S. Senate Candidate, could not attend, but Mr. Stevan Porter, VA-11th Congressional District Libertarian Candidate, spoke on his behalf.
This event brought together varying political views in a respectful, bi-partisan way that helped facilitate better understanding for those who plan to vote on November 6th. Helping voters to become more informed by meeting the candidates up close and in person was the main objective of the event. VIU provided live streaming for individuals to watch the political forum in its entirety online. Those in attendance benefited from a relaxed, welcoming environment that was created by Virginia International University in conjunction with the Multicultural Chambers Alliance. The diverse landscape and cultural communities that exist in the Northern Virginia region were celebrated and embraced by all candidates that acknowledged the uniqueness of our area. VIU was honored to host this event that supports our commitment to diversity and respect. Remember to exercise your right to vote in the November 6th General Election.
