Dr. Grace Klinefelter shares on mindfulness.

What is mindfulness and why does it matter to college students?

Mindfulness has been around for thousands of years and is becoming very important again as we all struggle to balance the seemingly endless demands on our time.  It is not a religious practice and is defined as “the act of paying attention to your present-moment experience with an attitude of compassionate curiosity (Ross, 20xx, p. 12).

How can it make a difference in your life?

You are spending most of your time now preparing for your future (graduation, job, career).  It is easy to forget that your life is really going on right now in this very minute and it is important for you to pay attention to this present time too.

Why is it important?

Mindfulness has many benefits.  It can

  • give you more control over your emotions
  • help you have a more positive attitude
  • give you more peace of mind
  • help understand difficulties in different ways
  • help you train your brain to focus on the present moment

How do you do it?

It involves meditation which is simply sitting straight in a chair with your feet on the floor, your eyes closed and focused on your breathing in and breathing out.  That’s all there is to it!!

It looks easy but really takes a lot of practice to get the maximum benefits!  It is well worth your time, however, since even a little bit of practice helps.
Try it and see for yourself.  You will begin to see a difference soon.
