Dr. Taemin Cha shares his thoughts on finance.
Students who are interested in majoring in finance at college would often find themselves wondering what finance is about and where majoring finance would lead them in the future. I, as a Ph.D. student, had often asked the same questions myself during my graduate studies. The answers to the questions can be two-pronged. In a practical sense, finance is a field with great earning potential and rewarding career options in a wide range of industries. However, studying finance and working in the finance industries mean more than that. Most of all, finance helps people realize their dreams by enabling creators and innovators to pursue their ideas without bearing all of the risks themselves. Had we not have the finance system that connects venture capitalists with entrepreneurs, we would not have had Yahoo, Google, and so forth. Also, affordable mortgage products enable first-time home buyers to purchase a house. Therefore, getting into finance goes beyond making money and as long as it is exercised with proper restraints, finance helps people realize their dreams.
