VIU Inclement Weather Policy

VIU Inclement Weather Policy

In the event of severe weather conditions, VIU may decide to close all non-essential University operations.  Upon an authorized official closing, all full-time employees scheduled to work on that particular day are expected to telecommute, to the extent possible, and will receive their regular pay.

When the University is not officially closed all employees are expected to report to work on time; however, when weather conditions create transportation difficulties that result in late arrival, supervisors may authorize up to two (2) hours of such lost time as an authorized absence.  If an employee determines that they are unable to commute to work, the employee will be required to use an equal amount of their accrued PTO or be unpaid.  All employees that have received pre-approved leave on the day of an authorized official closing will not be charged for leave that day.

Alert System – VIU uses an SMS Alert System as part of   our ongoing emergency management efforts. To enroll in   this system and stay informed about the status of the   University, text JOIN VIU to the number 30890.
