Thanksgiving Food Drive

Thanksgiving Food Drive
Did you know that even though Northern Virginia is considered one of the wealthiest jurisdictions in the country, we still face a poverty rate of about 5%?  This means, based on U.S. Census figures, that more than 90,000 people are living in poverty and 30% are children.
November 12-20 is National Hunger & Homeless Awareness Week.  In support of the cause, VIU is teaming up with Food for Others, a non-profit 501(c)(3) food pantry and food rescue operation in Fairfax to sponsor a Thanksgiving food drive for those people in our community who are homeless or living in poverty.

We will be collecting food in the HR office from November 7th through November 18th.  As this is a Thanksgiving food drive, the most needed items include:
  • Stuffing Mix
  • Cranberry Sauce
  • Gravy
  • Canned Sweet Potatoes
  • Canned/Boxed Potatoes
  • Cake Mix or Fixings for a Pie
  • Canned Tuna or Meat
  • Canned Fruit or Vegetables
  • Canned or Dried Beans
  • Boxed Meals
  • Peanut Butter
  • Jelly
  • Macaroni & Cheese
  • Pasta and Pasta Sauce
  • Coffee & Tea
  • Cereal
  • Rice
  • 100% Fruit Juice

Thank you in advance for your generous donation.  If you do not have the time to go grocery shopping, but you’d still like to help – please consider sponsoring a box.  A $35-40 donation will buy a box of food to feed a family of four for five days.  If you’re interested in sponsoring a box, please bring your money to the HR office.
