Faith and Cultural Communities Workshop

On Saturday, Febraury 28, 2015 from 9 AM – 3 PM Virginia International University’s School of Public & International Affairs (SPIA) and Institute for Islam and the Sciences (IIS) will host a workshop entitled Expanding Faith and Cultural Communities’ Cooperation in Fairfax County: Building Effective Networks and Common Projects. The event will be held at Virginia International University’s Village Drive campus, located at:

The SPIA and IIS invite local religious and community leaders to facilitate inter-organizational dialogue on issues concerning:

  1. Community services and support
  2. Working with the immigrant population

The group will first meet in an informal setting for members to get acquainted, present their views, discuss problems faced by their communities, exchange ideas, and establish linkage with other faith and cultural organizations in Fairfax County and the surrounding area.

The working group will provide a forum for:

  • Discussion and sharing of best practices
  • Exploring collaboration opportunities on common projects
  • Engaging students and volunteers

Discussion topics include:

  • Social issues such as hypothermia shelters, Medicaid, low-income housing, access to basic needs, healthcare access, minimum wage
  • Community service and humanitarian aid initiatives
  • Working with the immigrant population
  • Integration
  • Education

 9:00 AM –  9:30 AM | Sign-In

9:30 AM – 10:30 AM | Introduction

10:00 AM – 12:00 PM | Session I: Community Services & Support
Social Justice Issues and Humanitarian Help

12:00 PM –  1:00 PM | Light Lunch

 1:00 PM –  3:00 PM | Session II: Working with the Immigrant Population
Integration Issues and Education Problems
