Aimed at helping the international student community of VIU excel in their English language skills before enrolling into a degree program, the School of Language Studies offers a top quality English as a second language (ESL) program. This is an exciting avenue by which many students start their journey into academics in the US.
On November 11 and 12, VIU held a luncheon for ESL students. At the event, they were given the chance to exchange dialogue with former and current graduate students as a way to cultivate better understanding of VIU’s academic programs and the opportunities available to ESL students upon completing their language studies. The event featured a panel consisting of five guest speakers; each of the guests have a reputation for being highly involved in the affairs of the university. They shared topics relating to their specific areas of expertise, which included on-campus employment opportunities, student clubs, scholarships at VIU, and the Writing Center and library at VIU.
The event also gave the opportunity for ESL students to ask questions to each panelist as well as a representative from the university’s Admissions Office. VIU plans to continue this event each semester for new ESL students.
