Good Morning VIU Community,

As you may have heard, last Friday January 27, 2017 the President of the United States signed an Executive Order addressing immigrant, non-immigrant, and refugee entry into our country. In short, the order places a 90-day ban on the entry of individuals from seven countries, as well as a 120-day ban on refugee entry, and an indefinite ban on refugees from Syria.  The countries impacted by the ban include Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen. This does not embody the core values and beliefs of Virginia International University and we urge the federal government to address growing concerns among international students, faculty, and staff immediately.

On January 20th, the United States of America will swear in the 45th president. VIU’s northern Virginia location, only 30 minutes outside of Washington DC, provides students the opportunity to witness the event first hand. The official Oaths of Office for the President and Vice-President will take place around noon on Jan. 20th at the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. While tickets are needed to attend the ceremony, students can view the proceedings via giant video screens with audio along the National Mall. Spectators can also watch the inaugural parade on Pennsylvania Ave along the sidewalks, which are standing room only; the parade starts around 3 pm.
